  • EAA’s AirVenture show is always the venue for new products related to the owner-flown market, and not just for amateur-built airplanes. This year, Garmin revealed new products and upgrades to existing avionics. And shortly after the show, the Olathe, Kansas, manufacturer announced it had acquired online flight-planning pioneer FltPlan.
  • AIN editor-in-chief Matt Thurber got the opportunity to fly the Gulfstream G500, and he really liked what he saw–and felt. The fly-by-wire sidestick controls make this one of the best-handling Gulfstreams ever. Pilots are going to love it, according to Thurber.
  • AIN associate editor Alexa Rexroth got her shot at Bell’s 407GXi, and she was impressed with how the avionics enable the pilot to better focus on flying the helicopter.
  • AIN also addressed the security issues that came to light after a pair of suicide flights, and we reviewed how security is also an issue with drones, not only from the safety point of view, but also in how it relates to legal privacy issues.
  • Finally, the business aviation turnaround continues, with Dassault announcing its first optimistic outlook in recent memory. The first half of 2018 represents a strong rebound for the French airframer.
